However, Les Mueller of the 1945 World Championship Detroit Tigers pitched 19 2/3 innings without giving up an earned run. He did allow one unearned run. The game on July 21, 1945 vs. the A’s was called because of darkness after 24 innings, with the score still tied at 1-1.

Future HOFer George Kell, the A’s 3rd baseman, went 0 for 10 that day, setting an AL record for hitting futility in one day. When I asked him in recent years about that day, he told me he has been trying to forget it!
